Te Moana Nui a Hiva

Passing on Knowledge to Better Protect the Ocean!

LEFT SIDE: TE MOANA NUI A HIVA symbolizes the Pacific Ocean — a natural and cultural heritage that must be preserved.

It covers 165.25 million km², representing one third of the Earth's surface and 50% of the world's ocean volume. With 30,000 islands, it is vital to the identity and economy of its peoples.

RIGHT SIDE: TE TAINUI ATEA is our Marine Protected Area (MPA) name.

Classified as a Managed Marine Area in 2018, it became an MPA in 2025 covering the whole French Polynesia Exclusive Economic Area (EEZ). 4 zones with different levels of classification are about to be officially recognized in 2026.

French Polynesia's EEZ represents 4.55 million square kilometers, almost half of the national French EEZ, containing 118 islands and 5 archipelagoes.
